Luxury Private Villa with Pool, Tennis & Bocce
Parker Villas Exclusive - A private pocket listing available nowhere else
Is there a heaven on earth? Yes! It lies midway between Florence and Rome - a 90 minute drive from each. Villa Paradiso is a completely private luxury home with a stunning view of medieval Orvieto rising above the green, undulating landscape of Umbria. Unforgettable postcard quality vistas are enjoyed from several vantage points on the estate.
Meticulously restored, smartly furnished and impeccably maintained, this exceptional property is less than 20 minutes from the hill town center of medieval Orvieto and is designed for sheer comfort and relaxation. A gentle wooded road leads to a private gated entrance that opens to a deeply inviting garden oasis. Silence is occasionally interrupted by soft rustling breezes and the melody of songbirds.
As the name implies, this is a paradise of delicately manicured flowers complete with a stocked goldfish pond, a strawberry patch, a tiny vineyard and groves of peach, apple and olive trees - the grounds perfectly complement the 300+ year-old stone villa. The outdoor amenities include a spectacular salt-water pool (open from the first weekend in May through September), a smoothly surfaced tennis court with lights for evening play, bocce and an inviting ping pong table beneath a shady pergola. All are vying for your attention. On a level below the pool, a vegetable garden for guests is tended to six days a week by a dedicated and unobtrusive gardener who cares for the villa's extensive grounds. With the exception of Sunday, a cleaner arrives daily to refresh the house and changes the towels mid-week.
Before setting one foot inside Villa Paradiso, it's not surprising that guests are immediately drawn to the fully covered patio bordering the rear of the villa. From sunrise to sunset, this alluring spot offers a commanding view of Orvieto and gets plenty of use for socializing and dining. This is the ideal location to enjoy the welcome aperitif on arrival day - a thoughtful inclusion offered by the hospitable owners.
Upon stepping inside, the open interior plan for the living and dining room is a masterpiece for entertaining. Plush seating and a toasty wood stove adorn the living area that flows into the dining room. The kitchen is a showstopper with state of the art appliances: a Viking 8-burner stove with double ovens, a waist high fireplace grill, double sinks, an espresso machine, an oversize fridge with ice maker, plenty of workspace and a door opening to the patio with a gas grill and a wood burning barbecue. The kitchen beckons for a class in the art of Italian cooking, which can be arranged at the time of booking along with breakfasts and dinners.
Guest comfort is of foremost consideration to the owners of Villa Paradiso. All the windows and doors are screened. Each of the comparably sized, air conditioned bedrooms has a memory foam mattress, and the bathrooms are supplied with hairdryers. A very generous amount of electricity for air conditioning usage is included in the price. Guests are accommodated in the main villa and a cottage, 20 yards away that is equally as well appointed as the main house.
A laptop with a printer and high speed internet are conveniently placed in a corner of the kitchen. Satellite television with English language movie channels, surround sound speakers and a DVD player with a collection of movies in English round out the list of amenities.
Orvieto Scalo, the modern town beneath Orvieto with trains, banks, supermarkets with weekend hours and the entrance to the A1 highway is within an easy 10 minute drive. Orvieto's historic center perched on an outcrop of volcanic rock is reached in less than 20 minutes by car. Parking is available in garages under the hill town. The center is laden with restaurants, cafes, artisan shops and, of course, the Duomo, one of Italy's most important Renaissance treasures.
Beyond this paradise is Bagnoregio, an inhabited citadel high on a rocky crag filled with 3000 years of art and architecture and it's within a 15 minute drive; Bolsena and its lakeside attractions: 25 minutes by car; Todi: 45; the hand crafted ceramic outlets of Deruta, Perugia and the chocolate factory, Cortona, Tuscany's highest hill town, Montepulciano's wineries or the shores of Lake Trasimeno are all reached in one hour's drive; Siena, Spoleto, Assisi, Rome or Hadrian's gardens in Tivoli: 90; Porto Ercole along Tuscany's coast or Florence: well under two hours.
