Nestled in the hills, 30 minutes southeast of Florence, Villa Stellina is your command center for expeditions into one of Italy's most beloved cities. On a clear day, Brunelleschi's Duomo may be seen in the distance from a couple of vantage points on the property.
Villa Stellina welcomes guests seeking the rustic authenticity of a Tuscan farmhouse with a swimming pool along with close proximity to Florence for several visits during the week.
The origins of this stone-clad villa are lost in antiquity. Buttressed by an exceptionally thick stone foundation, there is some indication it once served as a fort. At some point in the early 1400s, it transitioned into a monastery. Today, Villa Stellina serves as a spacious vacation home with exquisite vaulted ceilings, air conditioned rooms and a bathroom for each bedroom. The decor is contemporary where it matters and complemented with period antiques.
A lower level, medieval-era cantina serves as a recreation room with a fireplace and billiard table.
Befitting its medieval origins, the villa's entrance is from a stone walled courtyard with a fully covered outdoor dining area, an ancient wood burning oven and a built-in barbecue. Evenings in the courtyard with its soft lighting and a star-lit sky are magical. To the rear of the villa, an entry gate opens to a few steps leading up to the swimming pool bordered by an olive grove.
Evening meals or a pizza night may be ordered at additional cost when booking.
Upon exiting the A1 Autostrada, the route to Villa Stellina passes through the suburb of Bagno a Ripoli before turning down a narrow one mile road that becomes unpaved for the last half before ending at the villa. This bumpy path requires backing up for a passing neighbor and is much easier to maneuver in smaller cars.
We anticipate the most commonly asked questions to center around commuting into Florence - where is the train station? the bus stop? There is no train in this area. The most convenient method of commuting into the city is driving to its eastern fringe and using a public garage. From the garage, the route to the historic center is either on foot for just over a mile or by catching a bus. Guests are provided with the instructions for both bus and city parking to decide which they prefer.
Within 5 minutes by car is a small neighborhood with a café bar, a bakery, a butcher and a pharmacy. A 10 minute drive leads into the town of Bagno a Ripoli with several necessities: a couple of cafes, a restaurant, a pizzeria, a chocolatier serving gelato, a bakery specializing in focaccia and breads made from ancient grains, dry cleaners, pharmacy, ATMs and a large supermarket. With a 10-15 minute drive in the surrounding countryside are a handful of authentic trattorie with many serving up the local specialty, la Bistecca alla Fiorentina - be sure to come with an appetite as a good Tuscan steak measures three to four fingers high.
Villa Stellina happens to have a neighbor, about a mile away, who is a truffle hunter. Along with his trusty dog, they lead a three-hour morning hunt into the forest to unearth these culinary treasures. Kiddies are welcome and are given their own digging spade. Advance reservations are required.
Fiesole, with its Roman amphitheatre and archaeological park is reached within a 30 minute drive. Heading in the opposite direction, the designer outlets in The Mall at Leccio are also 30 minutes away. Greve in Chianti is a 45 minute drive; San Gimignano, Arezzo, Castellina or Radda in Chianti: 60; Siena, Lucca or Pisa: 70; Viareggio, Montepulciano, Cortona or Bologna: 90.
A tourist tax collected by the town is paid separately on the first seven nights. Children under age 14 are exempt.
