Parker Villas Exclusive - A private pocket listing available nowhere else

Back in the 1400s when young Leonardo da Vinci's commute to Florence took a full day on horseback, he dreamed of flying machines and horseless vehicles. Nowadays, in the scant hour it takes to reach Florence by car from Vinci — or by train from nearby Empoli — one may also opt to visit the tower of Pisa, the walls of Lucca, the beaches of the Tuscan coast or the fabled Cinque Terre and see more Italy in one week than Da Vinci ever imagined possible.

Set on a hillside overlooking Leonardo's hometown of Vinci, less than a mile away, Villa Florencia is an unspoiled private oasis immersed in olive trees and vineyards. The nearest farmhouse, barely visible through dense foliage, is 150 yards away. A seldom used country road leading from Vinci, its restaurants, shops and cafes ends a few hundred yards past the villa at another farmhouse.

In Leonardo's time Villa Florencia was a hunting lodge. In 2019 the English speaking owner completely and stylishly transformed this retreat from the ground up with 21st century guests in mind. The unoverlooked swimming pool, sheltered by centuries-old olive trees and mature plantings is adjacent to the villa's outdoor living and dining. Both external seating areas are separated from the pool by a couple of steps and a dozen paces on level lawn.

Inside, Villa Florencia is fully air conditioned for summer enjoyment. During the restoration, the owner deliberately chose to contrast the villa's weathered stone facade with sleek, good quality modern interiors accented with family heirlooms and a whimsical touch, here and there, inspired by Leonardo's timeless genius. The results are stunning.

A delightfully well-equipped kitchen opens to both the indoor and outdoor dining areas. Adjacent to the ground floor living room, with an ornamental fireplace from times past, there's an easy access bedroom with en suite bath. Five additional bedrooms, each with an en suite bath, occupy the upper level. All six of the villa's bedrooms feature top notch bedding that may be seamlessly joined as queens or left as singles, oversized modern showers and plenty of natural light to complement a soft color palette throughout.

A midweek towel change and refresh cleaning are included. Home cooked meals and Tuscan cooking classes are available when reserved at the time of booking.

Nearby Vinci, a five minute downhill drive away, offers a choice of six restaurants, a popular gelato shop, cafes, a supermarket with weekend hours, a medieval castle, a Wednesday morning outdoor market and an engaging museum dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci's life, art and inventions.

Hikers will be fascinated with Vinci. No less than 10 well marked trails emanate from town. Among the most famous are the path to Da Vinci's home; an ancient Etruscan trail and a scenic stretch of the Frankish route, traversed by medieval knights and pilgrims on their way from Canterbury to Rome.

While Vinci is quite close and very appealing, this holiday location is ideal for exploring most of Tuscany and its neighboring regions in relatively short order.

The hill town of Cerreto Guidi, nearly 4000 years old, contains one of the last intact Medici villas still open to the public. It is reached in 10 minutes by car; more modern Empoli, with rapid rail service to Florence, Pisa, Lucca or the sea, entrance to the motorway and a variety of restaurants and shops: 20; San Miniato, renown for its prized white truffles and themed restaurants: 25; Montecatini Terme: 30; Pinocchio theme park in Collodi: 45; Florence, Lucca, Pisa or the beaches of Viareggio: 60; San Gimignano or Castellina in Chianti: 70; Siena: 90; Cinque Terre, Bologna or Montepulciano: 120.

A tourist tax collected by the town is paid separately on the first seven nights. Children under age 14 are exempt.
