Affordable apartment near San Gimignano
On a high, verdant rise facing the medieval towers of San Gimignano, seen over on the next peak, Rocca del Monaco offers postcard-perfect Tuscan views, spacious modern comfort, an on-site restaurant and a strategic proximity to Tuscany's prettiest hill town. From every direction, a myriad of major marvels await discovery. Within easy reach are the splendors of Florence to the north, the vineyards of Chianti to the east and the vibrancy of Siena to the south.
Rocca del Monaco is part of a tiny residential cluster of homes that began life as a monastery over a thousand years ago. By the Middle Ages, it evolved into a fortified stronghold for warrior monks traveling the Frankish route from Canterbury to Rome. Today, the imposing centerpiece housing Rocca del Monaco has been converted into a dozen separately owned flats sharing spectacular views off into infinity, a lovely Italianate garden and a large swimming pool, open from April Fool's to Halloween, facing the signature towers of San Gimignano.
A variety of furnished outdoor dining areas are thoughtfully positioned for all to enjoy relaxing reads or sunset cocktails while gazing across to the lighted towers of San Gimignano and the not so distant starlit hills of Chianti. The hamlet's onsite restaurant, open from April through October, serves dinner al fresco on a patio with panoramic views. The menu offers a couple of choices for each course, all centered around seasonal and local ingredients. After a busy day touring wineries, outdoor markets and ancient walled cities, the presence of a restaurant just steps away is a much appreciated convenience.
Rocca del Monaco is a spacious, reasonably priced, one bedroom apartment that tastefully combines old world charm with modern comfort and a breathtaking view of San Gimignano from the living area. Among its features are exposed stone, terracotta floors, wood beams and brick ceilings that frame its traditional Tuscan decor. Heat, air conditioning and a midweek towel change are included in the price. A common laundry room on the grounds has a coin-op washer/dryer.
While the Chianti region, known for its fabulous reds, lies within view and easy reach, the immediate area around San Gimignano is paradise for white wine lovers. Vernaccia, the local varietal, is one of Italy's finest whites. Three such wineries are within 5 to 10 minute drives.
The approach to the hamlet winds through the vineyards with the final mile becoming a gravel uphill drive. A full service supermarket with a bakery and wine selections is open every day and reached within a 15 minute drive. San Gimignano with multiple cafes, several restaurants, gelaterie, boutiques and a bustling Thursday morning outdoor market is within a 20 minute drive.
Modern Poggibonsi with all manner of shopping, a train station and the Florence to Siena highway exit is also within 20 minutes; Certaldo or Colle Val d'Elsa: 25; medieval Monteriggioni: 30; Castellina in Chianti: 40; Siena, Volterra or Radda in Chianti: 45; Florence: 60; Pisa, Lucca, Cortona, Montepulciano or Pienza: 90; Viareggio: 100; Cinque Terre: 3 hours.
A tourist tax collected by the town is paid separately on the first five nights. Children under age 12 are exempt.
