Cottage in Latium for Rent
With all the buzz centered around Rome nowadays, a countryside retreat just over an hour from the Eternal City may be just the perfect place to rest and unwind from a day of grand touring. The scenery of picture perfect enchantment is similar to that of Tuscany while offering easy proximity to Rome. By car, Rome is just over an hour away. A 10 minute drive leads to a train station with free parking and frequent rail service into Rome's Tiburtina station where the convenient Metro is located.
Aptly named, the Olive Garden is comprised of the owner's villa and two rental cottages found amidst the groves of a family run, extra virgin olive oil producing estate. The kind and friendly owners of The Olive Garden along with their trusty, black Lab tend to over 16 acres of olive trees and a variety of flora including palms, fruit and nut trees.
The two rental homes are 100 yards from one another and are well separated by an olive grove along a hillside. Each cottage has its own private and furnished outdoor space. Cottage Vacuna found at the top of the estate shares a swimming pool with the owners and their guests, while Cottage Saba, located at the bottom of the hill, has its own private pool.
Cottage Saba is a freestanding home nestled beside an olive grove and offers the most privacy on the estate. A spectacular panorama of verdant countryside ringed by the backdrop of the Sabine Mountains is enjoyed from Cottage Saba's furnished garden and first floor balcony.
This three bedroom country cottage is comfortably furnished and has a bathroom for each bedroom, screens on all windows and doors, two fireplaces, two kitchens and air conditioning with the exception of the ground floor bedroom. Upon arrival, guests often request the owners to program the thermostat to coincide with the times they expect to depart and return from day trips in order to contain their utility costs.
Guests of the Olive Garden are checked-in by the owner's friendly, English-speaking son, Sergio who does not live on the premises. Since his parents do not speak English, the arrival day is the opportune time to ask questions about the best routes into Rome or to point you in the direction of the train station.
A narrow three mile long road leads from the town of Poggio Mirteto to Cottage Saba's driveway. It takes less than five minutes by car to reach this delightful little, non-touristy town. This pre-Roman citadel of Sabine origin has several stores for immediate shopping needs including a bakery, farm stand, butcher, deli and cafes.
Closer in, the area is full of ancient monasteries and hermitages along with beautiful rolling hills dappled with 11 lakes and a series of majestic mountains. A 30 minute drive south leads to the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria di Farfa. One of the most famous abbeys in Europe, it was founded in the 6th century and destroyed and rebuilt several times. Guided tours are provided of the refectory displaying 17th century Manenti frescoes, the cloister, the crypt and a small archaeological museum. An herbalist shop sells Sabina olive oil soap, herbal soaps, flower extracts, essential oils, honey and marmalade - all products are made on-site by the resident monks.
The Olive Garden is ideal for touring Rome by day and returning to the pristine countryside in the evening. This serene spot is also positioned for day trips into Umbria with Terni, Orvieto or Todi within an hour's drive; Villa d'Este's Renaissance gardens and fountains in Tivoli: 60 minutes; Lakes Bolsena or Bracciano: 80; Perugia, L'Aquila in Abruzzo or Anzio on Lazio's coast: 100; Assisi or Montepulciano in Tuscany: 2 hours.
