General Description
Villa Spago is a bastion of spacious privacy crowning a verdant, mostly level hilltop offering far reaching views across the green heart of Umbria with Mt. Subasio in the distance. Practically equidistant from three of Umbria's most sought after destinations: Perugia, Assisi and Todi, Villa Spago is tailor made for travelers seeking to explore everything this region has to offer. Over 800 olive trees -producing high quality extra virgin olive oil available for guest purchase - along with large symmetrical tracts of dazzling sunflower fields within the gated estate provide shelter, privacy and an abundance of outdoor space.
This classic farmhouse and its cottage were restored with great affection and attention to detail. The comfortable interiors have airy rooms furnished with country antiques and screened windows. A PC with Internet access is available. There are two ground level bedrooms each with their own bathroom for those preferring minimal steps. For the cooks in the group, the kitchen is equipped with professional appliances, and outside there is a wood fired oven and barbecue. The kind and accommodating family that owns Villa Spago is willing to conduct a cooking class focused on Umbrian cuisine. Over the years, our guests have unanimously given us rave reviews over this experience.
A mid week cleaning for three hours is included in the price. A weekday cooking class, meals, more cleaning and bicycle rental may be requested when booking.
Just four miles from the villa is a small town called Bastardo. The translation is quite obvious, but how do townsfolk refer to themselves? Among the dozens of villages you pass en route to the more famous ones, stop in on these very nice folks. We'd love to know.
The charming town of Montefalco with shops, restaurants and an outdoor market on Monday morning is among Umbria's top wine producers and is within a 10 minute drive. Trevi's olive oil museum is 20 minutes by car; Roman Spoleto: 25; Todi or Deruta: 40; Assisi: 45; Perugia or Orvieto: 60; Lake Trasimeno: 80; Cortona: 90; Rome or Siena: 120; Florence: two and a half hours.
For August 21 - September 17 in 2010, Villa Spago is offering a special price for smaller groups with 8 or fewer guests. At this price, the second floor, the cottage and one bedroom on the first floor are closed. This special price does not apply to 2011 reservations.
