Shopping and Dining: The tiny village of Lubriano is a 5 minute drive with a couple cafes, three restaurants, a pharmacy, two mini-markets and a supermarket, open on Sunday mornings. The village of Castiglione in Teverina is a 10 minute drive with three restaurants and a min-market. For more dining options and supermarkets, drive 18 minutes up to the medieval hill town of Orvieto with a selection of local grocers, restaurants, cafes, and bakeries.
Not To Be Missed:
A climb to the top of Orvieto's Torre del Moro for one of the best views looking out over Umbria. The town's Duomo with free admission is one of the most important examples of Gothic architecture. The Chapel of the Madonna di San Brizio contains a fresco series by Luca Signorelli.
Civita di Bagnoregio - An ancient hamlet reached only by a pedestrian footbridge. Hovering atop volanic rock, this village is slowly eroding into the Tiber valley below and is registered as an endangered site. Only 15 minutes from the villa.
Public Transportation: The Orvieto Scalo train station is on a main line with service to Florence or Rome. The most direct trains to Florence take over two hours and those heading to Rome take 90 minutes.
Lake Bolsena: It's a 25 minute drive to the medieval town of Bolsena and the shores of Europe's largest volcanic lake and one of the cleanest. The town of Bolsena boasts Roman walls, an amphitheatre and a medieval castle. Nearby are sandy beaches offering swimming, canoe/kayak rental and seasonal boat tours around the lake stopping at Bisentina island. There are half a dozen towns scattered around the lake and the hills are ideal for mountain biking and hiking.
Open Air Markets: In Orvieto's Piazza del Popolo, there is a morning market on Thursday and Saturday. Morning markets are held in Perugia on Tuesday and in Citta della Pieve or Todi on Saturday. An antique market is held in Todi on the Second Sunday of each month. Todi has an Italian Antique Exhibition taking place from April 15th - May 1st.
Festivals: In Orvieto, the first week of September is the Street Theater Festival. Orvieto hosts Umbria Jazz during the week between Christmas and New Year's into New Year's Day.
