Perugia Underground - In 1540, Pope Paul Farnese III destroyed part of the medieval city (to encourage obedience) and built a new fortress, the Rocca Paolina, on the remains. To provide a level foundation, he left entire medieval streets intact beneath his new fortress. Today, these streets are now connected by a series of escalators that bring visitors up from the lower town. It's possible to see medieval tall doorways and an occasional room with a fireplace.
