Italian Villas in Umbria

Villas in Umbria The green heart of Italy is undisturbed, quiet, almost monastic in its medieval simplicity. Perhaps it's because of the magnetism of Tuscany to the north or the draw of Rome to the south; Umbria never catered to the masses. It pulls from another direction. It conjures; gently at first, but irresistibly strong, Umbria fills a desolate void in modern life with notions of chivalry and valor.

Watch and listen. Soon you will feel the thunder of hoofbeats. The castle, no longer a ruin, its pennants aflutter, opens its gates to a gallop of knights in shining armor. Within, a princess in royal velvet is attended by her maidens. Classic sculptures adorn rock pools and sensuous gardens. Monks painstakingly hand-letter delicate parchment. Even a lonely dragon seems happy in the valley below. The sounds of pageantry and jousting ring from the proud walls of a city bursting with independence. To see, you must look at the marvels of Umbria with the mind's eye. Use them as tools and she will unlock a secret passageway for you. After all, this is the land of St. Francis, stigmata and mysticism.

Among its many jewels is Orvieto, surreal and suspended between heaven and earth. Deruta, solidly anchored, creates prized ceramics from the life-giving earth. Todi is the most livable city in the world. Perugia manages to be Etruscan, medieval and cosmopolitan simultaneously. Spoleto, of noble Roman birth and dressed by the Renaissance, is brought to the light of the world each year by the dream of an Italo-American composer. Lake Trasimeno, an aquatic paradise, spelled doom to the angry legions of Rome and gave sanctuary to St. Francis. And then there's Assisi, the spiritual capital of Italy, medieval to its core and rooted in the realism of Giotto. Umbria, like a painting by Perugino, holds something special for each of us.
