Northwest Tuscany Villa near Florence and Lucca
Parker Villas Exclusive - A private pocket listing available nowhere else
Treat yourself to the timeless Tuscan landscape that sparked the genius of Leonardo da Vinci over six centuries ago. Very little has changed. The panorama from Villa Olivetta extends over endless rolling hills draped in olive groves and vineyards. Leonardo's home town of Vinci with a fascinating museum dedicated to his creations, a few casual restaurants and welcoming cafés is within an easy seven minute drive.
For a variety of day trips, this central spot is hard to beat. Effortless day trips from Villa Olivetta lead east to Florence in 40 minutes, west to Lucca or Pisa, south to San Gimignano and the Chianti hill towns and north to the spas of Montecatini Terme. Park and ride the rails into historic Florence from the train station at Empoli, a mere 10 minutes away.
The real showstopper is Villa Olivetta sitting on a level hilltop with unimpeded views, soft breezes and lovely grounds complete with a vegetable garden and small orchard. Guests are welcome to the fruits of the orchard yielding cherries in May, apricots in June, apples in July, peaches in August and grapes and figs in September. Please ask the unobtrusive caretaker, who nurtures the garden, and he will gladly share the Tuscan bounty of seasonal vegetables and supply fresh eggs from the coop he keeps, 300 yards away. On arrival, the owner welcomes guests with a tasting of local wine, cheese and the estate's extra virgin olive oil.
The outdoor area highlights include a fully covered patio equipped for al fresco dining, a wood-fired BBQ and pizza oven and a large relaxing swimming pool overlooking the countryside. Inside, several French door entrances welcome guests into a spacious floor plan. Hand hewn beam ceilings over terra-cotta tiled floors perfectly complement a collection of Tuscan style furnishings. Two working fireplaces adorn the ground floor dining room and kitchen, along with an indoor wood burning oven.
Upstairs, four well-appointed, air conditioned bedrooms each have an en suite bathroom and screened windows. Unlimited use of the air conditioning along with a mid-week cleaning and towel change are included in the price.
The medieval village of Vinci, a seven minute drive away, offers a variety of small shops, restaurants, cafés, the Leonardo da Vinci museum and a fortified castle open to visitors. Supermarkets, the train station on the Florence - Pisa line and a host of restaurants, shops and banks are located in the larger, more modern town of Empoli, a 10 minute drive away. Travelers from afar flock to the village of San Miniato, a 20 minute drive away, for the White Truffle Festival during the last three weeks of November where outdoor tasting stands line the streets with culinary artistry. The thermal spa town of Montecatini Terme is 30 minutes by car; Florence: 40; Lucca or Pisa: 45; San Gimignano, Castellina in Chianti or the Tuscan coast: 60; Siena: 80; Bologna: 90; Cinque Terre: 2 hours.
