Tuscan wine estate near Florence
Welcome to the western hills of Florence dappled in olive groves and rolling vineyards for miles around. This luscious expanse was an elite hunting estate for the ruling Medici dynasty of the Renaissance. Back in the 15th century, Florence was a full day's ride on horseback. Today, Florence is reached in 35 minutes by car.
Toscanino is part of a 2000 acre, private estate that produces excellent Chianti, Vino di Carmignano DOCG, Rosť, Vin Santo, grappa and extra virgin olive oil. The medieval fortress that once stood guard over the Medici manor, evolved over time into a charming tiny village within a 400 yard walk from Toscanino. This quaint village now contains three trattorie, a wine shop and a seasonal gelateria.
The two restored farm buildings that make up Toscanino's five apartments sit right in the heart of a grove of silvery olive trees. From the grounds, the village's defensive tower crowns the view. A walk to the village starts from Toscanino's unpaved access road leading through the olive groves for 200 yards before intersecting with a paved road for the final 200 yards. While most of the road is lit, pack a small flashlight for evening strolls to the village for dinner. Of the three trattorie, one specializes in barbecue while another offers commanding views over the undisturbed countryside from a pretty outdoor terrace.
This idyllic sleepy Tuscan village also offers a bottega primarily stocked with local wines, oils, a selection of fresh and semi-aged Tuscan Pecorino cheese and basic staples. Two seasonal shops, a gelateria and a leather workshop taking custom orders for belts, shoes and bags are open for the spring and summer months.
The management has arranged for Toscanino guests to use the pool at a nearby resort hotel, a third of a mile away. The pool sits astride a lovely manicured garden with a poolside cocktail bar open for lunch and serving drinks into late afternoon. Guests are welcome to use the tennis court, ping pong, swing set and bicycles provided by the English speaking reception staff. There is also the option of purchasing the hotel's breakfast buffet, dining in their restaurant for dinner or signing up for a morning cooking class.
Inside the Toscanino apartments, each unit is well-proportioned, comfortably furnished and boasts newly renovated, large bathrooms with hair dryers and rainforest shower heads. Air conditioning, heat, WiFi and a mid-week towel change are all included in the price. While the apartments are spacious, the hideaway kitchenettes with a couple of burners and a microwave are for basic cooking. Having four restaurants within a third of a mile lessens the desire to prepare large meals.
Casa Lucca, Vinci and Pisa are open and airy, one bedroom apartments occupying the golden hued building. They share a furnished and tree shaded lawn area across from their entrances. While Casa Lucca is the most spacious and is ideal for those wanting to avoid steps, Casa Vinci and Casa Pisa enjoy a picturesque view up the village from their entrances.
Montelupo Fiorentino, reached in 12 minutes by car, is the closest sizable town offering a dozen restaurants, shops, cafes, a world class ceramics museum, a supermarket and a train station with 30 minute service into Florence. Closer to Florence, Lastra a Signa is a 15 minute drive away. Its rail station connects to Florence in 15 minutes. Within easy drives are Empoli's historic center: 20 minutes; Florence, the historic castles of Montespertoli or San Miniato, the truffle capital of Tuscany: 35; medieval Pistoia: 40; Fiesole or the spas of Montecatini Terme: 45; Lucca, Pisa, San Gimignano or Greve in Chianti: 60; Siena or the sandy beaches of Viareggio: 80; Bologna, Italy's gastronomic powerhouse: 90; the Cinque Terre: 2 hours.
