Both this home and its location are the embodiment of an "easy peasy" value-priced Tuscan vacation. Cassia Antica is perfectly positioned for travelers eager to explore multiple destinations in short order, ranging from Florence to Siena with San Gimignano and an array of Chianti hill towns and wineries in between. This spacious, single family property sits on an extra large plot of level land a mere 30 yards from the well-paved, ancient Cassia road connecting Rome to Florence. In Roman times, the Cassia was a principal inland thoroughfare of the empire. Today, this particular stretch, conveniently connects commuters residing in and around the nearby town of Barberino Val d'Elsa to the entrance of the Florence/Siena highway located in Poggibonsi within a ten minute drive.
Enclosed on all sides by wrought iron fences and dense hedges, Cassia Antica's gated entry opens to a stone driveway leading past a landscaped lawn accented by mature shade trees. At first glance, Cassia Antica stands out when compared to the classical, stone farmhouses synonymous with Tuscany. Built during Italy's postwar, boom years of the 50s, Cassia Antica reflects the comfy, prosperous mood of the period with its décor and expansive, well-lit interiors augmented by large screened windows and air conditioned bedrooms.
Twenty steps along the side of the house lead up to the main entrance which opens to an overly spacious living and dining room connected by French doors to a matching terrace spanning the entire length of the house. From this cocktail style terrace, the views to one side overlook a neighboring home amidst its olive grove and in the opposite direction is the Cassia road with a view to the rolling Chianti countryside in the distance. While this is primarily a strategic location for travelers on the go, glimpses of Tuscany's timeless countryside are visibly enjoyed from key vantage points.
The main level has an eat-in country kitchen with an open hearth fireplace and opens to a furnished dining patio, complete with a wood burning pizza oven. A few feet beyond the patio lies the pool nestled among the olive trees. The pool and outdoor dining area, to the rear of the house, are sheltered from the main estate entrance. Evening meals, a cooking class or a pizza night may be ordered at additional cost when booking.
Barberino Val d'Elsa, the nearest town offering a charming medieval area, a couple of cafes, two casual restaurants, a butcher and an ATM is a five minute drive away. Continuing along the Cassia, Tavarnelle Val di Pesa is 10 minutes away and has a couple more restaurants and a supermarket with weekend hours. Within a third of a mile, it's possible to walk to a pizzeria, open in the evenings. It's a half mile drive to a shoe outlet that's popular with the locals.
The unparalleled attribute of this location is uncomplicated access to the major attractions of Tuscany that lie beyond the immediate area. The Poggibonsi entrance of the toll-free Florence/Siena highway is reached in a mere 10 minutes. In addition to a wide range of shopping and supermarkets, Poggibonsi offers the convenience of trains serving Florence in just over an hour.
From Cassia Antica, the day trips options are nearly infinite. The sky scraping towers of San Gimignano or the walled village of Monteriggioni are each within a 20 minute drive; Siena or Castellina in Chianti: 30; Panzano or Greve in Chianti: 40; Florence or Volterra: 45; Lucca or Pisa: 75; Montepulciano, Montalcino or Cortona: 80.
